About the Studio
Located inside the historical Hilliard Mills, Silk City Music Factory is minutes off I84 in Manchester, CT. We are conveniently located for anyone in the Hartford area, including central and eastern Connecticut.
Our acoustically treated and isolated double-walled facility features a powerful ProTools HDX system to ensure creative workflow, great sound, and compatibility with pro audio facilities around the world.
We have many instruments on hand including acoustic, electric, and bass guitars (featuring Martins and Fenders), guitar and bass amps, a Yamaha console piano, a fully-loaded arranging system with synths, beats, samples and sounds galore, and a Yamaha Recording Custom drum kit with an assortment of cymbals. We have a great collection of microphones and preamps to capture your sound as cleanly and truly as possible.
Most importantly, we have 25 years of professional experience recording and producing artists and musicians just like yourself.
About the Staff
Phil Mann started making recordings with a 4-track cassette recorder & MIDI in high school. He studied music at UConn during the late 90's and also fronted the band Wide Black Sky.
He spent a year living in a recording studio near NYC as an intern before becoming a staff engineer. Over the next decade he engineered hundreds of projects and also worked as film scoring assistant to composer Angelo Badalamenti.
He moved back to CT for family, and in 2011 he opened Silk City Music Factory.
Jennifer Kreisberg's score for "Dawnland," recorded at Silk City with additional music by Phil Mann, was nominated for "Outstanding Score" in the 2019 News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does your studio cost?
$60/hour, all-inclusive -- that covers the room and an engineer (Phil Mann unless otherwise stated), with no hidden fees. There's a 2-hour minimum per session, and a 50% deposit to hold your booking. Your deposit is refundable with 24 hours advance notice.
Do you make music beds/instrumentals/beats?
Yes, that's something we do. We can't do it for every project, and it's one we like to discuss ahead of time.
Can I bring a friend or two?
Absolutely! Friends and family are welcome. The studio is comfortable for small groups. There's a couch and several seats in the control room.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Give at least 24 hours notice and we'll fully refund your deposit.
Do you accept cards, cash, or...?
Card, PayPal, Venmo, or cash -- whatever's easiest for you. Deposits to book online go through Square or PayPal; the rest can be settled however you like at the session.
Have you recorded [genre or instrument]?
With 25 years of engineering experience, Phil has recorded a little bit of just about everything! Surprise us though, we love it!
